A NUMBER of exhibitions are putting their best foot forward this week and we have two we would like to suggest. First up is a solo painting exhibition Acquaintance by Despo Michaelidou starting on Friday at the Oi Myloi Cultural Centre in Nicosia. Up second is Giannis Hatziosif, who will be presenting his photography exhibition entitled Africography – The Other Side of East Africa as of Saturday at the Ayion Omolyiton Cultural Workshop also in Nicosia.
Michaelidou will present her first solo exhibition which features works inspired by Nicosia. The exhibition is divided into three parts, namely, portraits, old city and sunsets. Together these three different sides of the city combine colours, faces and textures which portray Michaelidou’s personal view of the capital.
While Michaeidou provides us with an outlook on Nicosia, Hatziosif will get us acquainted with East Africa through his photography and notes on his travels. In the words of the man himself “Travel is like food, it is a weakness and a longing, and I am prone to both so I decided to combine the two. I went to another place to get a taste of it. I watched young people go about their daily routines and act out their habits. But as the days went by I realised that these were not just habits but options they had made.
“It was then that I made the option to fuse as much of my life with theirs and get caught up in their culture. This culture is what I want to share with people at the exhibition.”
Words and pictures will intrigue audience members to engage in the idea of this exchange of cultures and allow them to see Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda through captured instances.
