Paphos zoo has announced the arrival of a new female baby giraffe, which was shown off for the first time on Tuesday. It is the first such birth in Cyprus.
The calf was born on May 20 in the early hours of the morning, the zoo said “and she took her first step nearly exactly one hour later”.
It was mother Eleni’s first calf. The dad is called Achilles but they were being kept apart.
On Tuesday the zoo announced that it had now started to let the new mother and baby out into the enclosure for the last few afternoons. “We will continue to do this until we are happy that the male is also comfortable with the new arrival,” it said.
“Although they have meet through the fence in their sleeping quarters. We still don’t want to take any risks and will continue to keep mother and baby apart from dad,” it added.
