I write in relation to your new Boats and Berths section as I find your efforts in tackling the yachting industry highly commendable as it is an industry which has been neglected by Cyprus over the years in comparison to the rest of Europe.
I have been involved in this market for 12 years working as a superyacht lawyer for leading yachting UK law firms in London, Monaco and Greece and now more recently for Oceda in Greece and it has always saddened me as a Cypriot to not come across Cyprus more over the years from a yachting perspective. I am pleased to see things have begun to change with recent marina development as it is absurd for a Mediterranean island with strong corporate services and networks in place not to have a stronger place on the yachting map be it by way of the Cypriot flag registry, available ownership structures, refit yards, marinas etc.
It is frustrating that Malta, for example, has fared extremely well in this industry and is very much ahead of Cyprus on this front. Saying that we do face the significant obstacle of the Turkish embargo which limits our flag registrations and also cruising options.
On another note, I also wanted to let your readers know about an international superyacht conference we are sponsoring in Athens next month as I think it may be of interest to your readers.
I wish you all the best with your new venture.
Jennifer Timinis, Managing Director, Oceda, Athens
