To celebrate World Refugee Day on June 20 both Nicosia and Larnaca will stage festivals to honour the contributions of refugees to the host society, raise awareness on refugee issues, and strengthen solidarity between the Cypriot and refugee communities on the island.
The festival in Nicosia will run at Phaneromeni square on Wednesday from 6pm until 10pm. Co-organised with the Future Worlds Centre Cyprus Aware campaign, it will feature a rich multicultural programme and activities. These will include arts and crafts by Cypriot and refugee communities, traditional food prepared by refugee communities, poetry by Syrian-Palestinian refugees living here, street performers, a kids’ corner with activities and children’s book reading by authors. Dancers and singers will perform while DJ Claudio will provide with music from around the world.
The Larnaca crowd will get to get together with the local refugee community on Friday at the Phinikoudes area from 4pm until 8.30pm.
The seafront will also have the chance to taste international food and collect some handcraft goods while the kids get their faces painted and get involved in activities, but there is more. There will be a beauty corner with henna painting, threading, hair dressing and more.
