A fire broke out at 12:23 on Monday in a Paphos scrapyard packed with abandoned cars.
Although it was eventually brought under control, the fire caused extensive damage and investigations into the cause are still ongoing, Paphos CID chief Mihalis Ioannou told the Cyprus News Agency.
The scrapyard, owned by a 40-year-old permanent resident in Paphos, is in the Ayia Varvaras industrial area.
“There is no danger of expansion of the fire,” Fire Service spokesman, Andreas Kettis said earlier in the day.
“Damages are hard to estimate at the moment, as the cars were abandoned and immobilised,” he said.
Fire-fighters used three fire trucks to tackle the blaze with heavy winds hampering their task.
One truck remained at the scene in case the fire flared up again.
Members of the Fire Brigade and two police officers are investigating the causes of the fire.
