A 58-year-old Greek Cypriot man was detained in the north in connection with illegal entry and exit, Turkish Cypriot Kibris newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Ioannis Kyriakides is accused of entering the north from Ayios Dhometios checkpoint on Monday morning without following proper procedures.
He then tried to exit the north from Strovilla checkpoint in Famagusta the same way. As he was passing through, the Turkish Cypriot authorities activated the bollards used to stop vehicles.
The man claimed that no one stopped him at Ayios Dhometios checkpoint, and after driving around Nicosia, Kyrenia and Kythrea, he went to Famagusta to cross over to the south.
He said because the bollards were raised, he crashed his car and got out and ran towards the Dhekelia British base, where he was stopped and arrested before being handed over to the Turkish Cypriot authorities.
Kyriakides claimed the Turkish Cypriot authorities tried to kill him and objected to a three-day remand.
