With reference to the Sunday Mail’s July 9 feature on wind and solar power, and my own earlier ‘Expat View’ column about the wasteful and uneconomic wind turbines installed here at great public expense, recent highly authoritative opinion and well researched data has shown that one day we can forget about wind turbines, and indeed – fossil fuels – for our energy needs. I write this because the future of energy looks pretty good when the annual energy requirements for the entire planet are delivered gratis by the sun every single hour. It’s just a matter of photovoltaic technology and delivery systems catching up.
This is where further global research and public money should be directed and sensible governments should recognise and take heed of this definitive fact. Cyprus has made an encouraging start with its quite extensive photovoltaic production.
