The Cyprus men’s national golf team has travelled to Sofia, Bulgaria, to participate in the European Team Shield Championship 2017, at Pravets Golf Club, between August 2-5.
The national team members for the event are Alex Toouli, George Kalpakas Jr, Nikolas Pitiris and Christopher Kalpakas, accompanied by the Cyprus Golf Federation’s’s Secretary General, Nick Rossides.
This is the first time Cyprus is participating in this European event, which is considered as entry level for higher level European events. Cyprus joins another 12 countries, members of the European Golf Association, at the Pravets GC for this event.
Rossides stated that Cyprus’ participation is a very important stepping stone in the sport’s young history, for the progress of the sport on the island, as well as in helping Cyprus compete in higher level European competitions.
Rossides went on to say that in the last few years the federation has invested heavily in grassroots and junior golf and the results are slowly becoming apparent with this current strong team representing Cyprus in Bulgaria.
Slowly but steadily, Rossides said, Cyprus will be in a position to compete on the European stage not only in team events but in individual events as well.
Rossides thanked the federation’s member clubs as well as all athletes for the impeccable cooperation they have with the federation and said that the future looks bright for the sport in Cyprus and in particular in relation to the tourism industry and the economy of the country as a whole.
