This review takes us back to an area which is home to a number of small bars hidden between its narrow streets. Setting up shop in an area that already contained famous rock-themed bars like Savino and Stone Age, which have become part of the town’s fabric, looked a risk but it looks like Avalon Live has embedded itself well in Larnaca’s Laiki Yitonia.
Avalon started out as something between a rock and a sports bar but had far more success when focusing on local rock musicians. Now, Avalon Live is one of the most reliable places in town when it comes to supporting the local music scene.
The bar maintains a healthy crowd throughout the week, especially when local bands perform as well as the occasional karaoke night. The décor is made up of countless framed photos of old famous rockers to get you in the mood with the bar’s preferred choice of music, along with very dim lightening provided only by candles on each of the tables, each with a view of the main stage at the end of the establishment.
With students back in town for the summer, the place attracts a large number of rock fans and there is a different live event almost every few days. The headline event takes place on Saturday evenings, with a small entrance fee to fund the slightly bigger names who come down to play.
When it comes to drink selections, the bottled and draught beers are the better option. Elaborate mixtures are off the table and, fitting in with the theme of the bar, beer or bottled spirits are the safer choice. The bar is far more about the experience and the music than the quality of drinks themselves.
Food in the form of common bar snacks are now available at Avalon which saves those who would otherwise need to interrupt their attention from the stage to grab a bite to eat.
The crowd in each section tends to be between late teens and mid 20s, and it has become a popular alternative for those who are looking for a slightly new experience in Larnaca where the majority of bars in the area have been around for a number of years, and has proved a welcome addition to the Laiki Yitonia.
