After last year’s presentation of the exhibition Here Come the Brides at the Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR), the centre will be undressing the bride in an event focusing on the lingerie of the 1920s tomorrow.
Before the main event, the centre will be awarded with Europe’s top heritage award, the Grand Prix of the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/ Europa Nostra Award 2017. The hour-long award ceremony will start at 7pm with opening speeches by Executive Director of CVAR Dr Rita C Severis, member of the Board of Directors of the Costas and Rita Severis Foundation Dr Ayla Gurel, Secretary General of Europa Nostra Sneska Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic and education minister Costas Kadis. The award will then be presented by the vice-president of Europa Nostra, Androulla Vassiliou and an acceptance speech will be given by the chairman of the Costas & Rita Severis Foundation, Costas Severis.
Once the award ceremony has been completed, the live show Undress the Bride will begin at 8pm. The event, which is in cooperation with the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, is a sequel to last year’s event which presented our common heritage through wedding dresses.
The exhibition on show last year displayed more than 50 dresses, accessories, archival and photographic material from weddings. All this material was brought together to trace the development of Cypriot wedding dresses over the past two centuries.
The centre is now ready to go deeper and present a show of Cypriot underwear of the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. We will go beneath the dress to see how lace and crochet underwear is also a part of our cultural heritage.
