It looks set to be another jazzy weekend in Nicosia, with Gianna’s Jazz Quartet getting us in the swing of things on Saturday at Sarah’s Jazz Club.
The quartet will take us back in time with performances of vintage jazz standards from famous composers such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.
Gianna Koutsou will sing her heart out, while Loizos Paphitis will accompany her on guitar, Costas Challoumas will bring in the double bass and Emmanouil Pitsiladis will add the beats on his drums.
Koutsou has a Bachelor degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Nicosia. From 2014, she has participated in numerous events around the island and is the lead singer of the band Jazz Boulevard. She is currently teaching her own students and also performing in local venues in Nicosia.
Paphitis studied Jazz guitar at the Ionian University of Corfu and holds a Master’s degree in guitar performance from Leeds College of Music. You may know him from his work with George Kontrafouri’s Baby Trio. The guitarist also composes and performs his own music.
Challoumas studied pedagogy at the University of Cyprus and went on to continue his studies at The Collective School of Music in New York. Over the last 20 years he has spread his love of music far and wide by being a member of various musical ensembles and theatre performance groups.
Drummer Pitsiladis, from South Africa, has performed with a number of South African, Danish, German, and Cypriot musicians. He is currently working towards completing a Master’s in Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Nicosia.
