Two pianists and one soprano will take to the Rialto stage in Limasssol on Saturday to perform Russian masterpieces.
Renowned Cypriot soprano Zoe Nicolaidou will be joined by pianists Elina Linchevskaya and Zbynek Maruska to perform a programme featuring Russian romantic music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninov and Valery Gavrilin. These emotionally charged melodies will come to life with their enchanting rhythms and breathtaking lyricism, created especially for soprano and piano, as well as four-hand piano arrangements of some of Tchaikovsky’s most popular symphonic music including the universally-loved ballets The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty. Also on the programme is an arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s passionate symphonic poem Romeo and Juliet, alongside an excerpt from Gavrilin’s beautiful ballet Anyuta. The Russian Masterpieces programme will be completed with Rachmaninov’s ‘Vocalise’, and the more romantic pieces ‘The Dream’ and ‘Lilacs’.
Nicolaidou, from Limassol, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna – Magister Artium. She has performed under the guidance of such conductors as Philippe Jordan, with whom she performed Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Bernharndt Kontarsky on Fenelon’s Faust, and Dan Ettinger to bring to life Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro.
In 2011, she received the award for the most promising young singer of the season, Le Prix Lyrique du Cercle Carpeaux. In 2012 and 2013 she was invited back to the Opéra Bastille, under the baton of Evelino Pido, to perform the role of Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, and made her debut at the Rudolphinum in Prague in the world premiere of Kabat’s piece for string quartet and soprano Misterium Fidei.
The soprano won the Schlossoper Haldenstein International Singing Competition in 2007, and she was also a finalist at the Hilde Zadek Singing Competition in the same year in Vienna. She has recently received the 2013 Kyrenia Opera Award.
The two pianists, Linchevskaya and the Czech Maruska, studied at the Prague Musical Academy, the Russian Academy of Music and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. These studies enabled them to develop substantial recital activities as soloists, as well as allowing them to play with such orchestras as the Prague Symphony Orchestra, Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra and other well-known musical ensembles.
These common aspects of their artistic careers are what enabled their partnership to begin in 2007. This coming together of great pianists generated positive feedback from every concert where they performed. The pair have set up a chamber music group which aims to demonstrate the completeness in expression and fullness of sound of the pianoforte, while also creating an enjoyable musical experience.
The concert is held under the auspices of the First Lady of the Republic of Cyprus Andri Anastasiades, and the Russian Cultural Centre in Cyprus.
