A 56-year-old male Paphos resident was sentenced on Friday to 3.5 years in prison after being found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to his 42-year-old roommate last July after hitting him with a golf club during a heated argument.
The court said that it took into consideration the fact that the accused did not plan the attack and that the victim was not permanently damaged. It also took into consideration the 56-year-old’s clean criminal record and that he had been in custody since July 20, a few days after the incident occurred.
The 56-year-old man hit and seriously injured his roommate after he had been reportedly angered when the 42-year-old returned home drunk an hour after midnight and started making noise.
In the ensuing argument, the 56-year-old reportedly grabbed a golf club and attacked his roommate. The club broke in two and the suspect allegedly stabbed his roommate with the sharp edge.
The 42-year-old was treated in the intensive care unit of Paphos hospital with severe chest trauma.
The suspect had claimed that the victim had fallen on the broken golf club he was holding by accident.
