The Pantheon Art Cinema in Nicosia will join cinemas around the world on Wednesday, with a screening of The Royal Opera’s new production of La Boheme at 8pm.
The opera, directed by Richard Jones, is one of the most popular operas in the opera house’s repertoire. Giacomo Puccini’s romantic portrayal of bohemian Paris has captivated generations of opera lovers and newcomers with wonderful music and a love story drawn from everyday life.
It is love at first sight when Rodolfo and Mimi meet and what follows is a passionate, timeless and moving story. La Boheme focuses on a group of young artists, following their struggles to find money for food and rent – hence the name of the musical Rent, which is based on the opera. Although they do not have much money their spirits are cheered by their friendships and romantic ideals. They live contentedly in their small apartment but their idyllic lifestyle is threatened when Rodolfo learns that Mimi is gravely ill.
Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano conducts a superb young cast including Australian soprano Nicole Car as Mimi and American tenor Michael Fabiano as Rodolfo in this new production that returns to the essence of Puccini’s original opera.
Screening of a performance of the opera from the Royal Opera. November 22. Pantheon Art Cinema, 29 Diagorou Street, Nicosia. 8pm. €10. Tel: 22-675787
