The Loukia and Michael Zampelas Art Museum will give Nicosians a chance to catch a live performance as a result of an artistic residency under the name ‘Urban Collage’ on Saturday.
The exhibition to be displayed is the result of the five-day residency workshop that is currently being held at the museum and its surrounding area. This is the first time the museum has held such a residency, with artists from Cyprus and abroad.
The 10 selected artists are working with curator Christina Georgiou, who is combining her personal methodology on performance with research in order to help the artists materialise their expressions through their chosen mediums.
The idea behind the residency and exhibition focuses on the significance and peculiarity of the area, and how it can be experienced through the body of the artist in order to be performed at the museum. The approach and method of implementation consists of artistic research, including a practical and theoretical framework, around the title ‘Urban Collage: Sensing Spatiality Inside and Outside the Museum’.
This title is based on the idea that the body, through the senses, can be used as a tool to collect empirical data and transmit opportunities which can then be experienced by the viewer. The artists will work between the concepts of private and public and between the museum and its perimeter in order to familiarise themselves with the different realities surrounding their work, thus creating ideas that are equally accessible to both public spaces and the museum space.
The final part of the programme will give the participating artists the chance to showcase their findings through a series of site-specific interventions performed in the area and by creating sensory approaches in relation to the site, before the final presentation at the museum on Saturday. The performance will show how the body can be used as a tool for formulating a psychophysical experience through live actions, so that the area can be experienced beyond the everyday.
