Some say that the best things to invest in are property and art. The property market is going up and the 23rd Psatharis Auction of Cypriot and Greek Artwork set for tomorrow is sure to spike the indicative line on the market grid up a few notches.
Highlights include paintings by Solomos Frangoulidis, Christoforos Savva, Polikleitos Rengos, Michael Kashalos, Agenor Asteriadis, Adamantios Diamantis, Vasilis Ithakisios, Telemachos Kanthos, Yiorgos Mavroidis, Theodoros Pantaleon, Andreas Karayan, Dimitris Mytaras, Katy Stephanidou, Stass Paraskos, Lefteris Economou, Yannis Gaitis and Dimosthenis Kokkinidis.
Talking about the auction, Nikos Psatharis, Founder of Psatharis Auction House, said “It is an outstanding collection of rare and important works covering major schools and representing different styles and periods of Greek and Cypriot Art.”
Psatharis places emphasis on the importance and the rarity of the Cypriot and Greek artwork in the collection, by referring to the fact that some of the lot’s rare pieces include The Dancer, an ink drawing, from the early period of Yannis Gaitis showing influences from Cubism and Picasso; The Spongers, a painting by Valias Semertzidis showing influences by Van Gogh’s early period, and the Small Street in Mykonos by Poleiklitos Rengos with references in impressionism and in abstraction.
Also within the lot art lovers will find Rose in Vase by first generation Cypriot artist Frangoulidis. In this painting the artist uses loose brushstrokes and softer shapes, putting emphasis on unblended colours and permitting light to permeate and surround the surface. A painting that refers to the longing for the sea is Boat – Ayios Nicolaos – Skiathos by Rengos. In this painting the boat is mounted on the sand with the sea behind it and tiny figures on either side. You will also find Figures by Mytaras, which illustrates the artist’s fascination with expressionism.
The works to go up for auction can be viewed today from 10am until 10pm and tomorrow from 10am until 4pm at Hilton’s Akamas Hall.
