Round 15 of the championship will take place over three days starting on Saturday, with the Cyprus FA scheduling the most exciting ties, Omonia vs Apollon and AEL vs Apoel, for Monday, largely due to the two visiting teams’ European fixtures.
Over the weekend, the game between second placed Anorthosis and vastly improved Alki stands out, especially as the Famagusta team has experienced a dip in form in recent weeks and made to sweat against ‘lesser’ opponents.
They had to come back from a goal down to defeat second division strugglers Xylotymbou in the cup while last Sunday they defeated Nea Salamina thanks to a hotly disputed last-minute penalty.
Alki on the other hand, appear to have overcome a slump that saw them slip dangerously down the table after five losses with two consecutive wins.
Struggling Olympiakos let in nine goals in their last couple of games and they will have to improve defensively if they are to get anything out of their home tie against leaders AEK.
AEK are going through a purple patch managing four wins and a draw in their last five games with their most impressive performance being the 5-0 mauling of Omonia last week.
Nea Salamina and Aris are both in need of points as they are currently in the relegation zone, while bottom-placed Ethnikos Achnas have to travel to Pafos FC who will be looking to bounce back from their 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Apollon.
In the final weekend game Ermis entertain in-form Doxa with the home side capable of taking the three points that will take them further away from the relegation zone.
The two Monday games between Omonia vs Apollon and AEL vs Apoel are crucial for all four but more so for the home sides.
Omonia, who sacked their coach following their defeat at AEK, are now in danger of missing out on a top six place, while AEL need to win to bounce back from their unexpected and humiliating midweek defeat to second division side Ayia Napa.
Apollon and Apoel, despite both losing by 3-0 in their last European ties of the season, will now divert all their attention to the domestic league and given their depth and quality in their squads will be favourites to win their respective games.
