A Paphos gallery is fast becoming a popular meeting spot for residents, tourists and art and culture lovers and is encouraging visitors to the old town with its latest attraction a solo exhibition by Keith Walker opening on Thursday.
Chakra Gallery, which opened in October, is down a side street in Paphos old town in an old renovated house and has already hosted a number of successful exhibitions and events.
Founder, 28-year-old English Cypriot Lauren Love, said she wanted to create a space which could show an eclectic mix of unique artworks from a variety of local artists across the island and to create a positive and energy filled space for the town.
Walker’s exhibition is called Mini-Retrospective. He studied Fine Art in the UK and graduated with an Art Teachers’ Diploma from Southampton University. He has also worked alongside other artists at their Newlyn and St. Ives studios.
During the opening event, from 6-9pm, ‘one world music’, a popular online European radio station, will interview Walker live.
His exhibition includes work from a number of his series of paintings, including ‘Underwater Sunlight’ where he explores the effects that water and light produce.
Walker started work on this collection in 2008 when his model was pregnant with her first child, and then subsequently her second, said Love, and it explores the changes experienced in a woman’s body during this time.
“Initially, I will work in acrylic paint because I like to work quickly and on several at a time and then, if I feel the painting will benefit, I will work over the top in oil paint,” he said.
‘Pebbles & Puddles’ is a collection inspired by the artist’s fascination with geology and found objects, such as, pebbles, geological structures and mine pools.
“Rainwater reacts with the minerals in the mine waste to produce an incredible range of colours, but beware, the ground is toxic,” he said.
‘The Scorched Earth’ series was inspired by the pattern of burnt stubble seen in fields during the autumn. His works are created by cutting and burning onto boards and then adding burnt sections of various material including those used on roofs, sand, sandpaper, cement and plaster.
‘The Thin Veneer’ is a collection of paintings provoked by the events of 9/11 and represent the artist’s “more serious work which explores the times we live in and the human condition”, said Walker.
And finally, ‘Nude Studies’ is a throwback to a time when he resided in Cornwall and worked in the studios of Newlyn and St Ives artists. Pen, chalk and pastels are his chosen media.
Love said that visitors to the opening will enjoy a glass of mulled wine, ambient music, and a Shamanic Flute Performance by Reiki Master Chrissie Sheppard, which will take place in the Secret Garden.
Chakra gallery also hosts artwork from more than 36 local artists, including mosaics, sculptures, paintings and limited-edition prints, digital installations and photography and handmade gifts and accessories.
