Some of the most famous Christmas songs written by jazz composers will make our spirit bright next week in Limassol when soprano Katerina Mina takes to the Rialto stage with a number of jazz musicians.
Mina, who is a graduate of Guildhall School of Music & Drama and has been an award winner in Spain’s contest Julian Gayarre and an Italian ecclesiastical music competition, will spread the Christmas cheer with jazz musicians Yiannis Hadjiloizou (piano), Giorgos Krasidis (saxophone) and Irinaeos Koullouras (double bass) next Friday.
In 2009, the London-based Cypriot opera soprano was declared singer of the year by the magazine Madame Figaro. She has experience in many roles: Kupava in the Russian opera The Snow Maiden, Violetta in La Traviata, Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Mimi in La Boheme, Vivita in Vaftistikos as well as Nedda in Pagliacci.
Throughout her career, Mina has performed in Germany, the United Kingdom, Finland, Greece, Spain, Japan, Cyprus, Italy, France, the United Arab Emirates and Thailand. She has also participated in a number of international music festivals, such as, but not limited to, the London Song Festival, Roman River, Grimeborn Festival, Eure Poetique et Musicale.
She recorded her new CD with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Grzegorz Nowak. The CD features operatic arias by Verdi, Giordano, Beethoven, Wagner, Cilea and Puccini, ‘Andromache’s Farewell’ by Samuel Barber, as well as two world-premiere pieces by Swiss composer Stephan Hodel based on Mina’s poetry.
Following an official invitation by UNESCO, in May 2018 the soprano will perform Linda Lamon’s piece ‘Romance for the Stars’ during the official inauguration ceremony of the International Day of Light at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
The Christmas special programme to jazz up our season, will include the songs ‘Santa Baby’, ‘I’ll be Home for Christmas’, ‘Blue Christmas’, ‘Zat you Santa Claus’, ‘Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire’, ‘White Christmas’ and more.
