AEK could only manage a home draw against a battling Ermis Aradippou, with Anorthosis joining them at the top of the table after beating Aris.
Apollon and Apoel beat Olympiakos and Nea Salamina respectively while the two other weekend games, Doxa v AEL and Ethnikos v Omonia, ended in draws.
AEK paid the price for a below-par performance and dropped two valuable points at home to Ermis in a 1-1 draw.
AEK dominated the opening half but apart from a missed penalty early on by Ivan Triscovski, they created precious little in front of the Ermis goal until Acoran’s goal on the stroke of half-time.
From the restart, Ermis pushed forward and managed to draw level through Imerekof in the 65th minute. They should have taken the lead a few minutes later but their leading scorer Emerghara failed to beat AEK goalkeeper Pablo from close range.
The final minutes saw AEK push forward for the winner but they were unable to break down Ermis’ well-organised backline and had to settle for the draw.
Anorthosis left it late against Aris, scoring twice in the last ten minutes through their captain Joao Victor and and striker Andre Alves.
The Famagusta team should have wrapped up the points well before as they missed a host of chances to score much earlier in the game and limited Aris to just one attempt on goal.
A lacklustre Apoel had to come back from a goal down to defeat battling Nea Salamina in Nicosia thanks to a last-minute goal by Ghayas Zahid.
Salamina had taken the lead against the run of play through a Brigito header but an own goal by Damachou brought the sides level until Zahid’s late strike.
In yet another impressive performance, Apollon put five past Olympiakos and, should they win their three games in hand over the two leaders, they will top the league by three points.
Yuste, Papoulis, a couple by Zelayia and a Constantinou own goal were the scorers.
Doxa and AEL shared the points even though the Limassol side did miss a penalty late on.
In a pulsating game, with both sides scoring twice and missing a number of chances, Ethnikos Achnas and Omonia had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
Twice Ethnikos took the lead through Pinceli and Enescu but twice Omonia hit back though Lopes and Christophi, will all four goals coming in the opening half-hour.
This was Ivaylo Petev’s first game in charge of Omonia and he was quick to point out that his side need to improve defensively if they are to win games.
Alki Oroklinis beat Pafos FC 2-1 on Monday night in the final game of the round.
