There is lots happening around the island as we get closer to Christmas but there is one day in Paphos that will have music lovers wanting to go to more than one event, which is possible if planned right.
The first musical event on Tuesday is a new opera The Abduction of Beautiful Helen, with music and libretto by Polis Charalambous. The Opera is based on ancient Greek history and is set in the Palace of the King of Sparta, where a number of suitors are showing off their skills to impress Helen and her father, the King, so they may be the one to take her hand in marriage. The one who finally wins her father’s affection is Menelaus. While the festivities are going on to celebrate the upcoming marriage, Paris, the Prince of Troy appears. He is amazed by Helen’s beauty and tries to resist falling in love with her. This doesn’t last long as Menelaus receives a message of his father’s death and has to got to Crete for the funeral. Blinded by love, Prince Paris takes Helen – who has also fallen for the young prince – and they go to Troy.
Leaving beauties behind that launched a thousand ships, those who prefer jazz to opera should head on down to the Otto Diece, where the Moonriver swing and jazz band will perform a whole set of Christmas hits.
The band, that was put together by Paphos-based Scottish Cypriot singer Michael Antoniou in order to give Paphos what it was missing – a swinging jazz band – will also perform the greatest hits of Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, Matt Monro and Al Martino.
Antoniou will be joined by Renad Nourmanchine on piano, Ivan Sarbash on the saxophone and Sergie Sergienko on drums.
