Apoel managed to hang on to top spot in the Cyprus football championship thanks to a last-gasp winner by defender Nicolas Ioannou against Olympiakos, while Apollon kept up the pressure with a comfortable 4-1 win against relegated Ethnikos Achnas.
Elsewhere, Anorthosis moved three points clear of AEK following a narrow 1-0 win over AEL and AEK’s draw against Pafos FC.
After being dumped out of the cup against Doxa Katokopias in the cup last week, Omonia suffered further humiliation at their hands when they lost 3-1, wiping away any slim chance Omonia may have had of a European finish.
Doxa’s triumph was all the more impressive as they had to play for most of the second half with 10 men after Poutziouris was shown a straight red for a reckless challenge on Omonia’s Filiotis.
Apoel almost paid for their profligacy in front of goal against a battling and well-organised Olympiakos who thought that they had snatched a point after Torres had brought the game level at 2-2 with a spectacular overhead kick in the fourth minute of added time.
However Apoel defender Nicolas Ioannou had other ideas as he rose highest to head past Olympiakos goalkeeper Hindi a couple of minutes later with virtually the last kick of the game.
The leaders had taken the lead just after the half hour mark through Rolland Sallay but poor marking allowed Sotiriou to head unchallenged past Apoel goalkeeper Perez five minutes after the restart.
Delattorre restored Apoel’s lead with a smart finish in the 78th minute before the final goal flurry that gave the champions the three points.
There were no such problems for Apollon who made sure of the points against relegated Ethnikos before the first half was over as they raced into a 3-1 lead.
Skembri, Sardinero and Zelaya scored before the break with Marcovic adding a fourth late on in the game. Ethnikos managed a consolation goal through Charalamboud.
Anorthosis’ winter signing Michal Duris netted yet again as he rounded AEL keeper to score the only goal of the game midway into the second half.
It was a cruel result for AEL who, despite being the better side, were kept at bay by some excellent goalkeeping by Anorthosis’ Arush.
AEK salvaged a point through Larena right at the end against Pafos FC, who must be ruing their luck as they missed a number of chances to double their goal tally after Berigo had given them the lead.
Nea Salamina took a huge step towards first division safety after defeating Alki 3-0 thanks to goals by Carlao, Tiago and Eludu while Ermis hit four past relegated Aris.
