More women is good news ‘but it could be better’

By Constantinos Psillides

APPOINTING more women in key positions in the government is great news but more needs to be done, according to Susan Pavlou, head of the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS).

“We are especially delighted for the appointment of Chrystalla Georghadji as the head of the Central Bank, the only woman in that position in the EU. That is wonderful news for us, because it shows for the first time that women are able to tackle hard…

Yet another bad idea

By Timothy Spyrou

THE NEWS, if confirmed, that the government intends “to appoint a fully political board” which will consist of non-executives, while the current executive directors of the Cyprus National Hydrocarbons Company (CNHC) will be demoted to department heads, is a huge blow to the future of our economy, and our hopes for a lean, accountable and transparent state. It is an open tender for more corruption and patronage. It will be seen as a provocation by the Turkish-Cypriots,…

Is there political manoeuvring to control the gas?

By Elias Hazou

THE GOVERNMENT aims to appoint a ‘fully political board’ to the national oil and gas corporation, giving it total control over the entity, the Sunday Mail is told.
The coming shake-up at the company will see the position of executive director abolished, and the people now serving as executives will get a different job title. In effect, they are to be demoted to department heads.
And that’s a key reason why a top energy official…
