Dying Makariou to rock to the beat on summer nights

By Poly Pantelides
SUMMER nights in Nicosia are about to get groovier with free dancing and music on Makarios Avenue, the home of free Jamm-iN sessions, every Thursday evening throughout June and much of July.

Project Nicosia, Nicosia municipality’s cultural offering, will be hosting the sessions in front of the National Bank of Greece, and will kick off the events this Thursday with Electro-Jamm.
Free parking around Makarios Avenue after 7pm, and cheap drinks will add to the attractions, organisers at Project Nicosia said yesterday.

The events have been dubbed ‘Makarios live(s)’, a statement that acknowledges Makarios Avenue’s decline in recent years. Makarios Avenue used to be Nicosia’s main shopping street but shops have closed en masse, as they fell victim to the high rents, the economic crisis and the growth of shopping malls and the re-emergence of Onasagorou and Ledra Streets in the old town.

But between 8pm and midnight on Thursdays, Makarios Avenue will be the home of dancing and musical theatre performances while DJs and bands will be offering anything from rock and heavy metal music to jazz and world. Six Jamm-iN nights are due to take place throughout June and on July 4 and 11.

Those who are so inclined can heed Project Nicosia’s advice and save their change “for the (really cheap) drinks” and join them for some dancing in the middle of the street.
