Marcos Baghdatis is set to start his grass court season at the ATP World Tour 250 Gerry Webber Open in Halle, where he will take on Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis in the opening round on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cypriot number one has a 4-1 career lead over World No. 38 Gulbis, who won the Delray Beach title in February and has had good results during the clay-court swing.
Baghdatis won their only previous grass court meeting six years ago in the first round of Wimbledon after four sets.
Baghdatis, who is currently 40th at the latest Emirates ATP Rankings, arrived in Germany hunting for his first tour victory since reaching the Rotterdam quarterfinals in February.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed success in Halle in the past, finishing runner-up to Czech Tomas Berdych in the 2007 final.
Should Baghdatis overcome Gulbis, he would then face the third-seeded German Tommy Haas, who has received a bye into the second round and has a projected quarterfinal clash with Milos Raonic of Canada.
