A 42-year-old Egyptian man was remanded in custody for five days on Saturday in connection with illegally importing 79 kilograms of tobacco.
The man, who arrived on a Friday afternoon flight from Cairo via Athens, was caught at Larnaca airport with 319 sachets of tobacco weighing 250 grams each.
The haul was worth €16,491 in taxes, the court heard.
The man, who had travelled to Cyprus four times previously, was carrying four large suitcases, which caught the attention of the drug squad.
During his remand hearing, the suspect burst into tears, begging the judge to let him go.
He claimed he was the father of three children and did not know what he was doing was illegal.
The judge explained that he was not on trial and that authorities needed time to investigate whether he had any accomplices on the island.
