Vergas resigns from DIKO secretariat

PAPHOS Mayor and DIKO member Savvas Vergas announced yesterday he was resigning from the party’s secretariat, accusing DIKO chief Marios Garoyian of turning a blind eye to internal party problems.

Vergas said that following presidential elections the secretariat had not been meeting and was no longer playing a serious role within the party. Vergas said that he was no longer kept informed, as a secretariat member, of any decisions nor is he asked to participate.

He also accused Garoyian of indifference and inaction in relation to party issues relating to the party’s workings in Paphos, negatively impacting DIKO’s regional operations.

But he said he nonetheless wished to remain in DIKO’s executive board.

Garoyian’s leadership and choice to support Nicos Anastasiades in February’s presidential elections brought to the fore a dispute with Nicolas Papadopoulos, who opposed the candidacy. Papadopoulos has said he will run for the party’s leadership elections, earmarked for this November.
