Pip and Pup

After taking the UK by storm on TV show Britain’s Got Talent by singing with her dog Pippa Langhorne has moved to Paphos to try her charms on the island. BEJAY BROWNE meets her

From pageant queen to performing star, Pippa Langhorne is determined to turn the female population of Paphos into ladies. The 22-year-old, who was a semi finalist (Pip and Pup) on Britain’s Got Talent, moved to Paphos four months ago and says she now aims to teach women here “how to be ladylike”.

The stunning performer, who exudes confidence and is beautifully turned out, believes she can help any women to behave and walk like a lady; after all she used to be a tomboy.
“I like modeling so I have started up a modeling agency and academy based in Paphos. I started participating in pageants when I was 16. I was a bit of a tomboy when I was younger and I learnt how to be a lady and I would like to promote to girls and women how to be more ladylike,” she says.

The opera and classical crossover singer moved to Paphos with her boyfriend and Buddy the dog – a Lhasa apso. She wowed the judges and audience on Britain’s Got Talent and went through to the 2011 semi finals with her opera-singing duet with Buddy.

Pippa has performed at numerous events in Cyprus since arriving here in March, some with her dog and some alone or with other local singers.
“I also teach singing to four to eight year olds and as I like modeling I decided to start up a Paphos Top Model which is a modeling agency and academy.” The models on her books range in age from four to 80. “We have a photo studio for portfolios, weddings, events and parties and we also organise fashion shows, pageants and other events.”
Pippa is currently busy with arranging a number of upcoming fashion shows, some involving “ordinary people” – one such event is scheduled to take place at Minthis Hills resort on July 26. “It’s a fashion show for the over 30s and I think it’s a great opportunity for regular people to take part and have fun.”

In addition, the ex model is organising a Little Miss Paphos and Miss Paphos pageant. “Our pageants are not full glitz ones like in America- we are promoting a more natural look.”
And as the stage currently dominates her life, it was where she always wanted to be. “I always wanted to perform – I was one of those hairbrush singers. My Dad was a choir boy when he was younger and I have inspired him to get back into singing and visit homes for pensioners to entertain them.”

Originally from Worchester, Pippa’s first gig saw her busking in Birmingham. “Having never performed in front of an audience before I was very nervous but the experience was amazing. I sang for half an hour, the crowds gathered and I made £500.”

But it was when she paired up with her dog that she really got noticed. “I bought a four month old dog just before I moved out of home to keep me company and I had a wedding booking to sing Pie Jesu. I was practicing and Buddy ran up to me howling – I put the clip on Youtube, and it racked up hits.”
She then received a phone call from the researchers of hugely successful TV show Britain’s Got Talent, “they had seen the Youtube clip and asked us to come in for an audition. Buddy was only six months old; it’s one thing to sing in the kitchen and another in front of an audience, I wasn’t sure if he would do it and I was worried about feeling silly.”
The pair travelled to London for the rehearsals and then the competition where Buddy rose to the occasion and sang along with his owner. They made it through to the semi-finals and shot to fame almost overnight.

Since then Pippa has sung at numerous events including for Sky sports channel and London Fashion Week but she says touring the UK with her act in support of both animal and children’s charities has been the highlight of her career so far.
Since moving to Paphos, Pippa and Buddy have already taken Cyprus by storm, but she is having trouble trying to get Buddy to sing along to any songs other than classical. “He doesn’t like pop music,” she said.

But it seems that Buddy is otherwise happy with his move to Cyprus and is coping well with the heat. “He sleeps in front of the fan and he loves it-he also loves it by the pool.”
