Breakfasts for needy children outside school term

RULING DISY yesterday suggested that free breakfasts for needy schoolchildren continue to be given during the holidays.

The subject was brought up yesterday in a meeting between representatives of the labour and education ministries, the Archbishopric, the parents association, along with volunteer and NGOs at the DISY offices.

After the meeting party leader Averof Neophytou said it was agreed the children also needed help outside of the school year.

Figures discussed at the meeting showed that in 2012, some 5,734 elementary and high school students received free breakfasts. Around 2,700 applications were still pending at the end of 2012.

The cost of the breakfasts is estimated to be at €1.53 million.

Carrefour supermarkets, the Limassol Bishopric and the Limassol school district board gave free breakfasts to needy school children over the school year in Limassol.

The Shacolas Group also prepared breakfasts and deliver them to drop-off points in Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca. Representatives of the education ministry then delivered the supplies to primary schools.
