19-year old critical after bike smash

A 19-year-old man is in critical condition after the motorbike he was riding crashed into the pavement on Saturday evening in Nicosia, severely injuring him and the 20-year-old driver, police said.

Around 10.40pm on Salaminos Avenue, the 20-year-old lost control of the motorbike he was driving, hitting the pavement and throwing both men from the vehicle.

Both were wearing helmets at the time of the accident. The 19-year-old collided with a metal cable box, police said.
They were taken to Nicosia general hospital where the 19-year-old was placed on a respirator in the intensive care unit. Doctors said he suffered a number of injuries including a severe spinal injury. The 20-year-old was given first aid and held for precautionary reasons after suffering injuries to his left leg and arm.

Nicosia traffic police is investigating the incident.
