Bar review: Politeia, Nicosia

By Alexia Papakyriakou

Laid back, chill out spaces serving coffee in a low profile environment seem to be cropping up at each new turn in old Nicosia, and Politeia is another example of this. And this one boasts a total of 14 different kinds of espresso to enjoy in the peaceful and romantic setting right on the Green Line. But what sets it apart is that all proceeds raised will be given to charity, more specifically Recoding Care, which supports mothers and children.

Politeia has been operating for less than two months, offering indoor and outdoor seating, colourful chairs and tables and beautiful paintings, making you feel as if you are sitting in your own yard for a coffee with friends in a candlelit atmosphere.

Politeia café/bar operates from an old house in downtown Nicosia. Adding to the homely feel is a selection of magazines and books customers are free to browse as well as a small gallery area with selected pieces of art made by fashion designer Maria Sophocleous and many others. The gallery includes special clothes, jewellery, bags and paintings. Other artists interested in having their work featured will be seen in the future.

When it comes to ordering, Politeia offers a wide selection of coffees, many different kinds of espressos (ristretto, roma, livanto, volluto, cosi, lavazza, indiya from India, rosabasya from Columbia and many others) as well as Cypriot coffee, frappe, soft drinks and juices, beers and alcoholic beverages and several delicious snacks to accompany all at very reasonable prices.

Several events are planned at Politeia and for the moment every Thursday customers have the chance to enjoy two young performers Markos and Eonas who are accompanied with guitars.

Visit Politeia to enjoy a drink while giving money to a good cause. It definitely worth the night out!
