‘Illegal’ potatoes will be destroyed

THE AGRICULTURE Ministry has given orders to destroy 2,500kg of potatoes transported from the north to the government-controlled areas, it was announced on Wednesday.

According to a ministry announcement, the agriculture department will destroy the potatoes which were transported south of the dividing line in violation of the Green Line Regulation (GLR) covering the movement of goods across the buffer zone.

The announcement stated that on July 26, during the inspection of a cargo of water melons being transported across the Green Line, inspectors also found 2,500kg potatoes, which had not been declared and were not accompanied by the necessary documents, as set out in the GLR.

The offending potatoes were confiscated and orders were given for their destruction.

The customs department, which is responsible for implementation of the GLR, is investigating the case. and will impose the necessary penalties, taking into account the seriousness of the case, said the announcement.
