Man arrested in connection with Petalies region fire

Police arrested a 60-year-old man from the village of Sykopetra in the Limassol district on Tuesday following a fire which started on the man’s plot of land.

According to reports the fire began on Tuesday at around 2.20pm in the Petalies region of the village.

Due to the strong winds, the fire spread quickly to a private pine tree forest and other plots of land in the area.

Eleven fire trucks and two forestry department aeroplanes were used to help deal with the blaze which was extinguished at around 5.30pm later that day, after having destroyed around 8 hectares of land.

The 60-year-old whose plot of land was the origin of the fire was placed under arrest following information received by police that he had started the fire.
