Beaches clear of oil remnants


Remnants from the oil-spill in the sea off the coast of Karpas in the north have been completely removed from Famagusta beaches according to Paralimni Mayor, Theodoros Pyrillis.

“The southerly winds blowing since dawn (on Wednesday) in the marina area off Famagusta, have changed the direction of the flow of remaining oil deposits and have drifted further into the sea,” Pyrillis said.

Ayia Napa Mayor Yiannis Karousos also assured the public that the beaches are clean and open for everyone. “Ayia Napa has not faced or is currently encountering any similar problems,” Karousos said.

The oil spill in the north happened on July 16 and reached Famagusta waters on July 23.
