Two arrests in assault and rape case

TWO ROMANIAN men, 27 and 36, were arrested in Limassol on Thursday for allegedly confessing to assaulting and raping a 37-year-old Polish mother of two on Wednesday.

According to Limassol CID head Ioannis Sotiriades, police were tipped off to the suspects after receiving witness testimonies that placed the woman at a bar in Limassol and later allegedly getting into the car belonging to the 27-year-old.

The 27-year-old Romanian man has been living permanently in Cyprus for the last two years, police said.

Police located the car at around noon on Thursday. After being taken to the station and questioned, the 27-year-old allegedly pointed to his 36-year-old compatriot as the one who assaulted and raped the woman.

The 36-year-old, who was later arrested, said that both men took part in the crime and they were drunk at the time. They will appear in court for their remand hearing on Friday.

The woman was found half naked and semi-comatose on a roadside between Fasoula and Apsiou villages in Limassol district a little after 6am on Wednesday.
