LARNACA district court on Saturday issued a seven-day remand order for a 32-year-old man in connection with the murder of Angelos Phedonos, 46, whose body was discovered in an abandoned hotel by the Larnaca-Dhekelia coastline on Thursday.
The Phedonos family told police on Wednesday that the victim had gone missing from his home in the Nicosia suburb of Latsia. His body was found in the lobby of abandoned hotel Beau Rivage the following evening. He was wearing only a swimsuit. He took five blows to the head, and carried injuries elsewhere in his body. A post mortem confirmed Phedonos had sustained serious head injuries. His car was found abandoned in a plot nearby.
Police sources said they discovered the victim’s mobile phone in the car, and discovered connections between the suspect and the victim, meriting further investigation. Telecommunication data between the victim and the suspect showed 67 mobile phone exchanges between the two of them. The 32-year-old placed classified ads in a local publication, but the relationship between suspect and victim was not immediately clear on Saturday.
Police said that a wooden handle for a hoe found in the murder scene and a second handle found in the 32-year-old’s car were “identical”. The 32-year-old was arrested in late afternoon on Friday, and he denies having committed any offences.
According to a police spokesman, the suspect was not cooperating and was refusing a medical examination in connection with some scratches he has on his right hand.
