Anastasiades chats with Samaras

Greek PM Antonis Samaras

PRESIDENT Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras had a “lengthy” phone conversation yesterday, ahead of Samaras’ meeting this week with US president Barack Obama, a government announcement said.

Samaras is due to meet Obama in Washington on Thursday, and promised to relay Anastasiades’ views of the Cyprus problem in light of the resumption of peace talks this Autumn, government spokesman Christos Stylianides said.

“President Anastasiades pointed out in particular the importance of his proposal on Famagusta, which can give efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue a necessary push,” Stylianides said. He was referring to a government proposal to see the return of the fenced-off part of Famagusta in Varosha to its inhabitants in return for allowing EU-supervised trade at the occupied Famagusta port.
