A taste of Tsalapatis

The wines of Tsalapatis are making an impact, especially this year. The winery is located on a hilly area outside Polemi village in the Paphos region, making around 100,000 bottles. There is a certain style of wine here in addition to it producing two of the best whites on the island.

2012 Tsalapatis Winery, Rigena Xinisteri, Pafos Regional, Abv 12%

A wine that is rich in nuances and extremely pleasant, with a degree of oiliness and everything you would expect from a Paphos Xynisteri, such as light, crisp, refreshing with freshness, good acidity, grassy and floral aromas and that characteristic slight bitterness. An excellent wine, light yellow with greenish tints, bright lifted nose with citrus, grapefruit zest and white fruits with fine herb notes and mineral, all with a good crisp finish. Incredibly versatile and accessible to all palates, especially with grilled or fried halloumi cheese, green salads or with lighter seafood, shellfish or year round with nothing at all. €5.50

2012 Tsalapatis Winery, Melapsopodi, Sauvignon Blanc, Pafos Regional, Abv 13%

This winery is a pioneer of this white variety of French origin grown around the world and also now successfully in Cypriot vineyards. It gives wines rich, herbal and fruity aromas of grapefruit and citrus, melon and exotic fruits. The nose has intense citrus and a touch of gooseberry flavours with notes of capsicum and passionfruit. Fruit burst in the mouth with intensity and fullness, great palate weight and a clean, acid finish. This wine is wonderful with fish and all types of seafood; especially mussels. Try the wine alongside summer salads and poultry dishes. €9.30

2011 Tsalapatis Winery, Rigas, Mataro-Lefkada, Pafos Regional Abv 13%

With vibrant colour, spicy nose, blackcurrant characters and subtle earthiness, this wine takes the Mataro grape to its rightful place as a single varietal of note. Medium depth crimson with purple hues, the nose is filled with mulberry and blueberry aromas with lovely milk chocolate and a hint of white pepper, spice and dry raisins. Yummy sweet fruit and raisins is the first impression on the palate, but this quickly changes to what Mataro and Lefkada are known for, pepper and spice. It has a medium body but is very complex with very fine yet firm tannins, savoury notes and a little mineral streak which flows through the long and spicy finish. This red blend pairs well with grilled or roast red meat, earthy vegetables and herbs such as wild mushrooms and thyme. €5.50

2011 Tsalapatis Winery, Syrah, Pafos Regional Abv 14%

Syrah is one of the most adaptable imported varieties planted on the island. In the glass Tsalapatis Syrah is deeply opaque with blackish-red colour with a deep purplish core going out into a fine, bright violet rim definition with medium-high painted viscosity. There are deeply concentrated and powerful notes of crushed black fruit dominated by black cherries, loganberries, elderberry and brambleberries on the nose. Following that initial onslaught, there are minty phenolics, liquorice extract, white pepper references, herbs, blackberry liqueur and earthy minerals underlying. The wine fills the mouth with concentrated, powerful and richly spicy nectar of crushed black cherries, plums and boysenberries. The finish is lovely and lingering with a nice balance among the concentrated fruit, relatively high alcohol and ripe soft tannins that at no time intrude on the quality or taste of this interesting wine. It is excellent with medium rare hamburgers and Swiss cheese, with beef stew, grilled barbecue meat especially pork and lamb chops served slightly chilled. €8.50

Refreshing drinks from Oenoforos

2012 Bishop’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough New Zealand Abv 13%

Refreshing and aromatic, light straw and crystal clear, from the heart of the wine out to the translucent edges. Fresh and bright with tropical notes that suggest the wine will be delicious and bursting with flavour. Notes of sweet citrus, spice and hint of grassiness all add to the enchanting fragrance. As the wine begins to open, aromas become more potent and inviting with a sweeter note of honeysuckle and fresh pineapple. On first sip, the wine is instantly smooth and round with a light-weight feel. Lively acidity is expressed through fresh green apple, sweet citrus and subtle grassiness. After breathing the complexity begins to come alive, providing new layers of depth. Soft and silky smooth, the finish attests that this bright and fresh white wine is easy drinking. Pair with fish, seafood and spicy ethnic. €11.50

2012 Delheim Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch, South Africa, Abv 14%

This is a very good value wine from a white variety that thrived in this part of the world sourced from higher altitude vineyards in Stellenbosch. Pale straw, bright with green tinge colour, layers of pineapple, vanilla and quince on the nose. These flavours follow on the palate culminating in a tropical fruit salad, with crisp acidity and perfectly in balance. The lingering aftertaste is of honey-bush, grapefruit and a hint of ginger. Try this with ham and pineapple, barbecue pork or chicken, citrus salad and Camembert cheese. €9

2011 Chablis William Fevre, Chablis AOC, France, Abv 12.5%

William Fevre Chablis has a pale and bright gold colour, the nose is clean, perfumed and bright with a fair amount of minerality with flinty flavours of grapefruit. It is fresh, crisp and light on the palate, with minerals and flavours of citrus peel. It should be served chilled, and can be paired with oysters, charcuterie and fried fish. It goes very well with goat’s cheese. €16.75
