A minute with Andy Bargilly Scenographer, Artistic Director of KYPRIA International Festival

Where do you live?
I live, with my wife Anna, in Nicosia, Strovolos area, opposite a park in a flat on the 8th floor, having a fantastic view of Nicosia.

Best childhood memory?
Orange tree blossom’s smell all over the city of Famagusta and happy childhood in a caring family.

Most frequented restaurant and absolute favourite dish?
Halloumi and souvlaki at George’s Restaurant in Strovolos. Of course, I cannot resist the inviting smell and taste of spaghetti al dente with pesto sauce!

What did you have for breakfast?
Fried eggs, my favorite breakfast since childhood.

Would you class yourself as a day or night person? What’s your idea of the perfect night/day out?
A day and night and all weather person. I love summer, I am crazy about winter, I like to wake up very early in the morning, but happy to go to sleep late when I am with friends.

Best book ever read?
Being a theatre person it is, I suppose, expected to mention plays. So I do, because nothing can compete with the ancient Greek tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. Texts that have been written over 2,000 years ago and are still popular and diachronically contemporary. Similarly, all of Shakespeare’s plays.

Favourite film of all time?
Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergmann, since I can watch this film over and over and it always seems that it’s the first time I am watching it. Every time I watch this film I find in it new qualities. I cannot resist the temptation to mention Michael Radford’s Il Postino, Hitchcock’s The Thirty Nine Steps and The Birds, Terry Gilliam’s Brasil, Clint Eastwood’s Grand Torino, Michalis Kakoyiannis’s Windfall in Athens. The list is endless.

Favourite holiday destination (or best holiday ever taken)? What’s your dream trip?
Santorini, Niagara Falls, Prague, London, China, Egypt are some of the places where I can say I had great holidays, because I am that kind of person who can always find a good reason to enjoy holidays and travelling. In the future there are many places I would like to visit, but for sure I would most enjoy a trip all over the Mediterranean on a sailing boat.

What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
Classical, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto 1 – B Flat Minor.

What is always in your fridge?
Beers!

Dream house: rural retreat or urban dwelling? Where would it be, what would it be like?
A floating one. A large sailing boat, because this is the only ‘’dream house’’ that can give me the sense of the absolute freedom.

If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
Leonardo da Vinci, not to find out who was the mysterious lady Mona Liza but mainly to talk about his inventions and dreams.

If the world is ending in 24 hours what would you do?
Countdown and relax, since there is nothing I can do to stop it. A beer, or more, should help!

What is your greatest fear?
To work with people lacking common sense, imagination and optimism.

Tell me a joke…
Living in Cyprus, still hoping to see Culture to be a part of Politicians’ dream…
