Bar review: Viejo Bar, Paphos

By Bejay Browne

It has been a busy summer at Viejo bar in Paphos and the winter looks set to be even busier. Situated in an old, colonial-style building in Pano Paphos (opposite the old police station), this ‘alternative’ venue attracts a wide ranging crowd of under 40s.

Viejo enjoys a reputation for quality, service and something different. An abundance of music by both live bands and DJs, has already made it one of Paphos’ top night life venues.
The bar has an outdoor space which is utilised as a roof garden during warmer months and has been packed throughout the summer, serving reasonably priced drinks – their special cocktails are delicious and a must to try – and are made with an array of fresh fruit. More than 30 different beers are on offer and prices start from €2.50.

The bar has been open every night throughout the summer but during September it will open on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday and Saturday nights before re-opening all week long on October 1.

The interior space can hold up to 180 guests as can the roof garden and a wide ranging programme of live music events is now being planned for the winter months. This venue is a popular choice for birthday parties and other events and large group bookings are welcome. The staff are friendly and professional and ensure that first time customers become part of the regular crowd.

The dress is smart-casual and anything goes here as the venue is relaxed.
There are a number of different spaces at Viejo and the interior is in keeping with the older style of the building. Subtle lighting and plenty of seating ensure the space is cozy although it’s quite large. The project has seen the venue carefully transformed with clever use of reclaimed and re-used materials and objects. Traditional tiled floors and stone walls remain, helping to enhance the overall vintage feel of the venue.

An assortment of platters including cold cuts, nachos and fish start at €5 each and are a welcome accompaniment to the wide range of beverages on offer.
The winter months will see party goers once more descending on the venues of Paphos old town and Viejo will lead the way. This is a great place to visit for a pre-club drink, or to spend an entire evening with friends. Once tried, Viejo will become a favourite.
