Police officers suspended over alleged drugs possession (Updated)

TWO policemen, 26 and 33, were arrested in Kato Pyrgos on Wednesday after officers from the drugs squad, following a tip-off, searched the younger one and allegedly found three grammes of cannabis on his person and another three grammes in his car.

Following the arrest, officers then searched the flat where the pair live and found a precision scale which had traces of cannabis on it, police claim.

The pair were taken to court as police looked into whether the pair were on duty while under the influence of drugs, spokesman Andreas Angelides said.

“Police top brass have instructed that a criminal and disciplinary investigation takes place and both men have been suspended,” Angelides said.

He added police would investigate the case like any other.

“We have nothing to hide. The police handle cases which have to do with its own members the same way it handles cases that involve the public,” he said.

Angelides said it was worrying that the pair were allegedly under the influence of drugs while they were on duty.
