CyBC pulls out of 2014 Eurovision song contest

State broadcaster CyBC said on Thursday it will not be taking part in next year’s Eurovision song contest because of the economic crisis.

The CyBC board took the decision after considering the current public sentiment, a written statement said.

“It also took into account the additional reduction of the CyBC budget for 2014 and the need for drastic cuts in programming expenditure,” the statement said.

Cyprus first took part in the contest in 1981. It has 31 appearances.

Next year’s contest will be held in Denmark.
