Eight years for killer of Romanian woman

A 57-YEAR-OLD Romanian man was jailed for eight years on Monday by the Larnaca district court for murdering 56-year-old Mirela Dunca, also from Romania.

The murder happened on September 9 in an apartment behind the Ayios Lazaros church in Larnaca.

The 57-year-old confessed to killing Dunca with the handle of a hammer while he was drunk.

Dunca had been living in Cyprus since 2006. In 2008 she was married to an Indian man. More recently she was living in an abandoned house in Larnaca.

The woman was found in the 57-year-old’s bed at around noon on September 9. She was fully clothed but had multiple wounds all over her body.  The killer first told police he had woken up and found her dead but had not murdered her. He later confessed.

A post mortem concluded Dunca had died from internal bleeding caused by injures from a blunt object.

Larnaca police spokesman Charalambos Zachariou said at the time of the murder that he had received statements claiming that the 57-year-old had a rocky relationship with the victim.

They were both described as alcoholics who would often argue to the point of violence.
