POLICE in Larnaca are investigating a case of arson after a car was destroyed by a fire during the early hours of Wednesday as it was parked in the underground parking of a block of flats.
The police and fire service were notified at 1.20am.
The blaze was extinguished by fire-fighters and following initial investigations it was confirmed that it is a case of arson.
The damage to the car came to around €12,000 while the damage caused to the block of flats came to around €5,000, police said.
In a separate incident a 22-year-old Romanian man was arrested shortly after midnight on Tuesday in Limnaria in Paphos after officers allegedly caught him red-handed trying to get away from a flat owned by British pensioners with around €5,000 worth of their jewellery.
At around midnight police received reports that a man had been spotted acting suspiciously in a flat in Limnaria.
Officers stopped the 22-year-old as he was allegedly exiting the pensioners’ flat and trying to flee the scene.
He was searched and three gold rings and a golden bracelet belonging to the Brits valued at around €5,000 were found in his possession, police said.
He was arrested and held for questioning.
