British bases staff stage strike

Workers at the British military bases staged a two-hour strike on Friday morning to protest against pay cuts they consider unfair.

The head of the coordinating committee for trade unions SEK and PEO criticised British Base management for attempting to mislead the media.

“During an announcement on Thursday the British Bases management criticised the strikes, saying they were happening in support of pay rises,” Christos Tziapouras said.

He added that since 2006 that the bases have scrapped around 300 positions due to the financial crisis in the UK and that they were trying to exploit the crisis in Cyprus to implement more cuts.

“They are unacceptable and we will not tolerate them; the trade unions will gradually intensify their strike action,” he said.

Tziapouras called on the British bases management to review their decisions.
