AKEL reflects on its annus horribilis

THE CENTRAL Committee of main opposition party AKEL convened yesterday to evaluate the results of the last presidential elections, the work of the previous AKEL government and prospects for the future.

Central committee members, in the presence of former president Demetris Christofias, also discussed preparations for a new party conference, which will see some restructuring within the party, whose image has taken a significant blow in the last few years.

Christofias’ handling of the Mari explosion and economy have come under heavy criticism while police investigations into a dodgy land deal involving the CyTA pension fund have also failed to shed a positive light on the party.

According to a released statement yesterday, assessment of the previous five-year government and recent election results was done in a spirit of self-critique, with the aim of “shielding and strengthening the party so that AKEL is in a position to be most effective in serving our people, the workers and Cypriot society”.
