Foreign workers arrested

POLICE in Paphos arrested eight foreign nationals on Tuesday after searching a number of shops and restaurants as part of a campaign to stop illegal employment.

During the search, police checked 97 European citizens, 20 foreign nationals from non-EU countries and 78 Cypriots.

According to the police press office, eight foreign nationals were arrested, five of whom were illegally on the island. Six employers were also arrested, police said.

Labour department officials handed out 25 fines to employers who had workers not registered at the social insurance office.
