Italian food undeniably appeals to the taste buds of most but despite being widespread it is something that is rarely found well done. But Il Gusto managed to and tickled my taste buds in a way they haven’t been tickled in a long time.
In Akrotiri, Il Gusto might be a decent drive away from the city but it’s exactly what you need to escape the busy nightlife of Limassol. Do not be deterred by the the fear of getting lost, it’s incredibly easy to find.
The restaurant exudes an air of sophistication and the view of Limassol from that height is breathtaking. Yet, the main thing you will remember about Il Gusto is the food.
Il Gusto has such a variety of dishes on that you may find it difficult to choose a starter or a main dish. I spent 10 minutes flipping through the menu not being able to decide among the choices.
For the starter I went with the bruchetta con pesto di rucola e mozzarella which is a grilled chiapatta bread topped with rocket pesto sauce, mozzarella and sun dried tomatoes – a perfect opener to an Italian meal.
What also seemed delicious were the funghi al forno, which are carefully selected mushrooms stuffed with parmesan cheese, garlic butter topped with mozzarella in a delicious tomato sauce. To any fan of cheese both appetizers will certainly whet your appetite. However, the more adventurous may want to opt for the fegato d’ anatra con frutti di bosco, pere e salsa di acetobalsamico. This translates to delicious duck liver with forest fruits and baby pears in balsamic vinegar.
When it comes to the main dishes there is again a wealth of choice. With a large selection of pasta dishes do be adventurous. I chose the house pasta, Fusilli Gusto, made with strips of beef fillet, three kinds of peppers, mushrooms, onions, garlic, sun dried tomatoes and balsamic vinegar cooked in tomato sauce topped with mozzarella – the perfect combination of sauces and pepper toppings, pasta and beef. For a vegetarian option, do go for the Ravioli aiformaggi. This is ravioli stuffed with cheese in cream tomato sauce that is flavoured with grappa topped with mozzarella and ricotta cheese baked in the oven.
Now if you are not feeling the pasta, do go for the filetto di maialefacito, which is fillet pork stuffed with ricotta cheese and pancetta and cooked in a honey balsamic vinegar sauce. This dish is absolutely delicious. The honey balsamic cheese offers a bittersweet taste to the fillet. Another meat dish that should not be missed is the medaglioni di bovino con pomodoro e mozzarella, which is made with medallions of beef topped with fresh tomatoes and mozzarella, cooked in a creamy sauce with wild mushrooms and three kinds of bell peppers. There is an abundance of chicken and fish dishes too.
Il Gusto is one of the best Italian restaurants in the Limassol area and should not be missed.
