Free bus fare for elementary students continues

THE FREE bus service for elementary school students will continue but the government is thinking whether to charge high school students to cover the cost.

A bus fare for high school students was to be introduced in October but was scrapped following student demonstrations.

House Communication and Works committee chairman Antonis Antoniou said that ministry officials were given 15 days to conclude whether the free bus service could be extended to high school students as well and if that was not possible, to find another way to cover the cost.

Communications and Works ministry officials estimate that around 31,500 high school students – from a total of 50,000 – use the bus on a daily basis, at a cost of €3m a year.

All party MPs agreed that it’s unacceptable for children from poor families – many of which are eligible for benefits – to have to pay for their bus fare.
