Agreement to lead to better weather forecasts

Members of the Met Office are shown the Cy-Tera

CLOSER ties between the Cyprus Institute and the Meteorological Office should lead to better weather forecasts.

The two organistion signed an agreement yesterday formalising their existing cooperation.

Of specific significance is the shared use of the Cyprus Institute’s Cy-Tera Supercomputer. Through this arrangement the Met Office will be able to overcome limitations it currently faces regarding its existing computing power.

To predict the weather the department uses various techniques, one of which includes forecasts based on numerical methods. This method, however, requires greater computer power than the one currently available.

Access to the Cy-Tera Supercomputer will allow the department to perform faster and have more detailed forecasts.

The Cy-Tera Supercomputer is the most powerful computer open to academia in the Eastern Mediterranean.
